Hamachi pinging problems

I am having a problem with my mate for setting up Hamachi for VPN. We have both the same version installed and got to the same network but for some reason I can't ping him (Request times out) and he can ping me. He also tried Hamachi with another friend and had better luck since it worked out.

Any ideas on what might be the problem? We both have firewalls turned off. And as a side note, he does have Vista. (with a firewall off I presume)

Re: Hamachi pinging problems

It could be the router blocking it.

On the one that can't ping, open a TCP & UDP port and set Hamachi to use them and try again.

Re: Hamachi pinging problems

How can I check which port Hamachi is using and how do I change it? Searched through the preferences but found nothing. :(

Re: Hamachi pinging problems

I had the same problem, you can't very easily, but here's what I did.

If you go onto the router you will probably have a NAT section and then open ports (or worded similar - it's like this on a Draytek).

I had a box to put a UDP number so made one up effectively, which for example, you could use 5535 as the start and end port number.

If you have a seperate box for TCP then just put something like 5536.

With Hamachi, when you open it you will need to go into Sytem > Preferences > Settings > Advanced.

In there, scroll down until you see the bit PEER CONNECTIONS

There's a local UDP and local TCP line.

Click each of those and put the port number in the smaller box and click set.

If you've already done the router, then just power hamachi off and back on after OK'ing back to the start.

Hope that helps

Check the firewall.  Windows Live One Care, among other firewalls, block TCP/IP v4 Ping requests.  Look for the ICMP ruleset in your firewall.  I have yet to see the OS itself block ping requests, without prior configuration to do so that is.  But it is possible.

The router cannot block ping requests from the Hamachi Adapter, as the ping packet is encapsulated.  So unless your router can do packet inspection, it won't block you.
